Buying a used travel trailer

Submitted on December 16, 2010 | ReviewsNo Comment

Embarking on recreational vehicle shopping expedition is sort of like going out for a hike in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. There are many obstacles to overcome and many things to watch out for, although the chances of death from shopping for a travel trailer are quite slim, while the opposite can be said of the rain forest, where the smallest bug can be fatal.

Just like shopping for anything else, one must ask themselves numerous questions first. It’s best to find a sheet of paper or go on the computer and write these questions out, that way you don’t forget, as shopping for a travel trailer can be a long and complicated process.

The first question that needs to be asked if how much trailer do you need to suit your lifestyle and how much of a vehicle do you want in order to tow this trailer. Price is something that we can’t help you with, that’s something that you’ll need to figure out on your own. There are numerous sites on the web that will help you locate used travel trailers and give you prices, but be sure to stay in your means, as you never know what kinds of repairs will be needed on the trailer.

Anyways, when it comes to towing capacity there are two numbers that you must examine. The first is gross trailer weight and the other is the tongue weight. The former is the maximum weight a vehicle is designed to pull, while the latter is the downward force that the hitch ball can support. Both are equally important and can be found in the vehicles owner’s manual.

Once this information is figured out and a used travel trailer has been located, grab yourself a piece of paper and write down these areas to inspect. That way, you should be able to remember what to look for when examining the trailer, as sometimes it can be easy to forget in the heat of the moment.

When you first approach the vehicle, look at the place where it is located. Now, we don’t want to say that everybody is the same, but most people care for their trailer the same way they care about their home, cars and yard. If the house and the cars are in back condition, chances are the trailer will be as well. Once you get these first impressions out of the way, examine the exterior of the vehicle. Check for dings, dents, rusted spots, loose screws, chipping paint and all of the things that can be inspected from the ground. Now, be sure to go on the roof and look for water or sun damage and check for rubber seals cracking, secure vent covers and any cracks in the roof itself.

When you step inside the vehicle, check all the doors to make sure they close all the way and securely. Check the windows to make sure there is good shape and make sure all the carpets, walls and tiles are in good condition. Be sure to check for water damage on everything.

Now, when it comes to checking the furniture, most of the time its not going to be in new condition. But make sure there is no water damage, take off all the cushions and check everything. Make sure to go into the kitchen and the bathrooms to make sure all the appliances are working and that the water gets hot or cold. Go into the bedroom and lie down to make sure there is enough room, make sure the closets are big enough.

Shopping for used travel trailers isn’t an easy thing to do, but preparation and patience can go along way to making your purchase a smart one.
